How to Reduce Wrinkles & Puffy Eyes

Wrinkles and puffy eyes are common skin conditions as a person gets older. As a person ages, tissues around the eyes, including muscles, around the eye weaken. Normal fat that supports the eyes moves to the lower eyelids, according to the Mayo Clinic, making the eyes look puffy. Wrinkles appear with age as well, usually where sun exposure was the most prominent. The face, forearms and back of the hands are usually the first places wrinkles are noticeable. Wrinkles and puffy eyes are usually a cosmetic concern and rarely a serious medical condition. Ongoing, at home skin care can reduce wrinkles and puffy eyes. A dermatologist may also provide medical treatment, such as an injection, filler or topical treatment, to help with reducing wrinkles or puffy eyes.

Avoid the sun. According to WebMD, it is the primary cause of wrinkles. If you have to go outside, wear a sunscreen with a high SPF, sun protection factor.

    • 2

Sleep for at least eight hours a night and try sleeping on your back. Sleeping on your side or face down can potentially create "sleep lines" on the cheeks, chin and brow, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

    • 3

Watch what you eat. WebMD recommends eating more soy, fruits, vegetables and fish, particularly salmon. Salmon is considered a good source of protein and fatty acids that can help keep the skin healthy. Some research has shown some components of soy could possibly help protect and heal some of the damage caused by the sun.

Place cool wash cloth or gel eye mask on the eyes for 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 5

Drink healthy liquids, such as water, to stay hydrated. Dermatologist Dr. Carolyn Jacob says drinking healthy liquids can keep the skin tone firm and full looking.

    • 6

Reduce salt intake to help reduce excess water retention.

    • 7

Sleep for at least eight hours a night with your head slight raised with an extra pillow or raising the bed. According to the Mayo Clinic, raising the bed helps prevent fluids from accumulating around your eyes as you sleep.
