Fitness Equipment for Elderly Women

The American Academy of Family Physicians says exercise can improve blood pressure, diabetes, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and neurocognitive function in older adults. However, the AAFP also states that up to 75 percent of older Americans are "insufficiently active to achieve these health benefits." Despite what television advertisements may lead you to believe, you don't need to be a young model to use exercise equipment. Elderly women can also reap the benefits of exercise equipment.
  1. Dumbbells

    • According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis is a common disease among elderly woman that is likely to cause weak bones. If you have weak bones, then you are at more risk of breaking a bone when you fall. Performing exercise with dumbbells can help you strengthen your bones and muscles. You can use lightweight dumbbells that weigh two or three lbs. Exercises like biceps curls, upright rows and side shoulders raises can be performed with dumbbells. Use dumbbells with a neoprene, nonslip coating to help you avoid dropping the weights.

    Resistance Band

    • A resistance band is another piece of exercise equipment that can help elderly women strengthen their muscles. A resistance band is like a large rubber band that provides resistance when it is pulled. Some bands provide more resistance than others. Elderly women should start with a low-resistance band. You can attach one end of the band to a door knob or furniture and pull on the other end. Shoulder rotations and leg extensions are among the exercises that can be performed with a resistance band.

    Treadmill

    • Elderly women can get a low-impact, cardio workout on a treadmill. Make sure you choose a treadmill that allows you to start out a slow speed of about .5 mph. When using a treadmill, attach an emergency lanyard to yourself so that the machine will automatically shut down if you fall. To help prevent falls, walk on a treadmill that has handrails. Watching television while walking on a treadmill can make this exercise more enjoyable.

    Walking Shoes

    • If you don't want to be stuck in the house or the gym, you can also get some exercise by going for a walk outside. The only piece of equipment you need for this exercise is a good pair of walking shoes. Choose shoes that are comfortable, provide support and fit well. The wrong pair of shoes can cause foot or ankle problems. Wear new shoes around your house for a couple of days before going for a walk outside. If you scuff your shoes outside, you will probably not be able to return them to the store.
