Different Types of Shower Chairs Available

Shower chairs are an important part of a disabled or elderly person's daily routine. They are designed to aid individuals with a disability by allowing them to shower while sitting instead of standing. Shower chairs allow those with certain disabilities to take showers with little or no help from caregivers, thus providing a greater sense of independence. Many styles of shower chairs made of both plastic and wood materials are available. Shower chairs can range from a basic stool to custom-made models that tailor to an individual's needs.

  1. Shower Stools

    • Shower stools are the most common type of shower chair. They are an inexpensive way to create stability for those with disabilities. They fit easily into narrow bathtubs or even shower stalls. The stools come with or without a back. The legs of the stool generally have slip-resistant rubber tips for added stability. Their smaller size often makes them easier to transport and store.

    Shower Benches

    • Shower benches come in a wide variety of styles. A shower bench can come with or without a back and can even be mounted to your shower wall for a more permanent solution. Shower benches can be made of heavy-duty durable plastic or teak wood with nonslip tips or suction cups for stability. Benches are generally larger and can accommodate larger individuals. Some benches also come in fold-up models for ease of portability and storage when not in use.

    Transfer Benches

    • A transfer bench is generally constructed from heavy-duty plastic. Transfer benches extend beyond the edge of the bathtub to allow for easy transfers in and out of the tub. Transfer benches usually have a built-in rail, and some models offer a combination transfer bench complete with a commode opening.

    Wheeled Chairs

    • Wheeled shower chairs are designed to be used with assistance provided by a caregiver. They are made of completely waterproof materials. Wheeled chairs allow users to be wheeled into the shower. They also offer back and arm support for comfort and stability. This type of chair proves most beneficial for individuals confined to a wheelchair.

    Mounted Shower Chairs

    • For a permanent solution, shower chairs and benches can be installed in a shower, allowing users the ability to stand while showering yet offering the option of a stable seat when needed. They are made from heavy-duty plastic or teak wood and can be custom-made to user specifications. Corner models are also an option.
