Outdoor Activities for the Elderly

An unfortunate truth of aging is that it will eventually slow you down. Joints will get stiff, limbs will ache and vision will dull, and favorite physical activities may become too strenuous to continue. The comfort of staying home will become a strong temptation for seniors, but there are still relaxed, physically casual activities that can get people out of the house, no matter what age. (see reference 1)
  1. Metal Detecting

    • This activity is perfect for seniors, as it takes little physical effort but provides hours of outdoor exploration. Typically, a metal detector is priced from $50 and up. This hobby, once started, takes its user around parks, beaches and all sorts of public places. The idea of buried treasure may seem antiquated, but some metal detector aficionados have found gold and even diamond jewelry, which could even make a profit out of an exciting hobby. (see reference 2)

    Gardening

    • This may be a little demanding for some seniors, but some dirt under the finger nail is worth the pride of a green thumb. A garden can be placed almost anywhere outdoors (even window gardens can get impressive) and putting it next to the house gives seniors the option of easily taking a break when they need it. It's also a very rewarding hobby, with flowers to be pressed, beautiful scenery to be made, and produce to eat -- including vegetables, herbs and fruits. (see reference 1)

    Yard Games

    • Sports may not be an option for many seniors, but that doesn't mean there aren't outdoor games they can't partake in. Many yard games, though requiring skill and coordination, don't require a lot of physical activity. Games such as lawn darts, horseshoes, lawn bowling or ladder toss provide engaging fun, but can be played without moving from a single spot. For seniors with a little more spring in their step, a casual game of badminton is possible as well. (see reference 2)
