Instructions

    • 1

Thwart falls by removing area rugs that can get caught on shoes, walkers and canes. Alternately, secure the rugs by using doubled-sided tape. Make sure there is proper and adequate lighting for day and night.

    • 2

Clear out excess furniture and clutter. Tripping over things is one of the leading causes of falls. Remove any cords that might interfere with walking.

    • 3

Encourage the senior to remain active because this will help him maintain his balance. If the person can take part in an exercise class, it will help his coordination and balance. In addition, exercising builds strength and stamina, which lessen the likelihood of falling

    • 4

Be sure the senior wears proper shoes with thin, non-slip soles. Slippers are not advisable. The sole and heel of the shoes should grip the floor.

    • 5

Ask the doctor about the senior's medication. If he is taking something that is making him dizzy or weak, perhaps an alternative medicine can be substituted.

    • 6

Encourage the senior to wear his glasses if he has vision problems. Not wearing glasses or wearing the wrong prescription can cause problems with depth perception and dizziness.

    • 7

Recommend that the senior use a cane or walker if his balance is off or he is swaying or regularly stumbling.

    • 8

Place non-slip mats in the bathtub or shower and install hand rails that can assist the senior as he gets in and out of the shower or bathtub. Put handrails along staircases and ensure that the stair area is kept clear and well lit.

    • 9

Ask the senior what difficulties he is having. He knows best. You can better meet his needs and concerns when you communicate.
