Psycho-Social Activities for the Elderly

Psychosocial activities are ones which psychological development is enhanced through social interaction. These activities can help seniors make friends and develop relationships while improving their outlook on life. Psychosocial activities are popular in nursing homes and retirement centers. Some seniors are stuck in their ways and psychosocial activities may help bring them out of their shell.
  1. Book Club

    • Organizing a book club encourages both individual and group learning. The senior reads the book with an analytical eye so that she has something to contribute to the discussion. During the discussion of the book, the senior may learn how to look at things in new ways and also enjoy the process of sharing and discussing literature.

    Games

    • Having seniors play board games or cards together gives them a reason to interact with each other. Seniors must develop friendly competitive skills during the game. The game is the backdrop to facilitate socializing. It almost doesn't matter what game is being played because the seniors will have to interact with each other.

    Group Therapy

    • Group therapy should be conducted by a qualified licensed therapist. Many seniors who have experienced war or a difficult life may have no one to talk to about their problems, issues and pain. Group therapy can be tremendously helpful in giving seniors a chance to express themselves without judgment in a safe, supportive environment.

    Exercise and Sports

    • While the elderly may not be able to play a game of tackle football, there are many activities they can enjoy such as lawn bowling, croquette, ping pong, billiards and shuffle board. The sports can be played as a team or individually. The exercise will benefit the seniors tremendously and also get them together talking while they play.
