How to Test Hair Follicles for Drugs
One method of drug testing consists of examining the hair for traces of chemicals found in common drugs. Hair tests have a longer window of testing for drug use -- up to 90 days, according to the United States Department of Labor -- when compared to urine samples, so it's the preferred choice for some parents, schools and companies.Instructions

1
Sterilize the scissors. Rub the blades of the scissors with rubbing alcohol and allow them to air dry. Depending on the kit, the scissors and rubbing alcohol may, or may not be included.
-
2
Cut the hair as close to the scalp as possible. Some kits recommend between 90 and 120 strands of hair, and that the hair be at least 1-1/2 inches long. The exact recommendations may differ depending on the kit, so read the directions carefully.

3
Place the hair in the collection vessel, whether it be an envelop or sheet of foil. Some test kits have specific spots where the hair roots must go, so look for this in the instruction manual, or the collection vessel itself.

4
Write the lab's address on the outside of the package -- along with your home address in the top left corner -- and mail it in. The address should be printed clearly on the kit's instruction manual.
