Alcohol Abuse in the Elderly
Alcohol abuse by the elderly can have a range of health implications. In 2002, Dr. L. Hays of the University of Kentucky reported that 2.5 million elderly adults and 21 percent of elderly hospital patients suffered from alcohol-related issues.-
Symptoms
-
Several telling symptoms may indicate elderly alcohol abuse. These include mental impairment, difficulty in caring for daily needs, failure to keep appointments, high blood pressure, frequent accidents or falls, numerous emergency room visits, stomach issues and family problems.
Treatment
-
Addressing treatment in the elderly consists of several steps. First, assess any patients who need additional evaluation. Discuss treatment with the patient, if he or she is ready. Determine whether the patient needs detoxification. Review the risks of withdrawal. Finally, plan follow-up and the coordination of further treatment with professionals.
Warning
-
Alcohol abuse in the elderly can be complicated by the use of prescription drugs. If the person does not disclose his alcohol consumption to his doctor or pharmacist, complications can occur. In addition, the elderly with alcohol abuse issues may not seek medical assistance.
