Consider whether you have already made failed attempts to stop drinking. If you have tried to quit drinking before but have been unsuccessful, you may have a problem and could benefit from AA.

Determine whether or not you feel that you need an alcoholic beverage, whether it is to have fun, satisfy a craving or to stop shaking.

Evaluate whether your drinking habits have caused legal, social or family problems.

Determine whether you have missed work or school due to drinking habits.

Consider whether you have periods of time while drinking that you cannot remember.

Call a hotline equipped with counselors who specialize in alcohol abuse issues. One option is the National Drug and Alcohol Information Treatment and Referral hotline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357). A counselor can act as a neutral third-party and give a professional opinion of your situation.
