Signs of Smoking Cannabis
Cannabis -- more often referred to as marijuana -- is the United States' most commonly used illicit drug, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. While often used as a recreational drug, cannabis can also legally be used for medicinal purposes in 15 states and the District of Columbia as of January 2011, as stated on the ProCon website. Regardless of the intended purpose of cannabis, it's widely accepted that long-term use can have negative affects, so it's worth knowing the typical signs of smoking it.-
Eye Appearance
-
Look at the eyes of the suspected user for signs of cannabis use. One of the most noticeable signs of marijuana use is bloodshot eyes; however, eye drops may be able to clear this up. The pupils may also be dilated and the top eyelids more droopy than normal. An overall tired or glazed look in the eyes may indicate marijuana use.
Thirst and Hunger
-
According to Middlebury College in Vermont, excessive thirst is a sign of cannabis use. This is primarily due to its tendency to dehydrate the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat. Cannabis can also increase appetite, especially for sweet foods.
Behavior
-
Cannabis use can affect several noticeable aspects of behavior. A person under the influence of cannabis my have trouble concentrating or take an abnormally long time to answer questions. For some users, inappropriate or excessive laughter may occur. Other signs to look for include an overall sluggish attitude, poor depth perception and slow body movements.
Drug Paraphernalia
-
If possible, look around the bedroom or vehicle of the suspected cannabis user. Items such as cigarette rolling papers, pipes or bongs are a very strong indicator of cannabis use. Also, small plastic bags or containers with seeds or green, leafy marijuana residue are even more obvious signs. Cannabis seeds are typically small, about 1/16 to 1/8 inch in diameter, with an oval shape and a brown or green color.
