How to Set Pool Timers

Every swimming pool must have a filter pump operating on a pool timer to save energy. Pools should “turn over” their full amount of water about every eight hours. Pool pumps usually operate about 10 hours per day, depending on the system, air temperature, sunlight and pool use. Setting a pool timer to turn a pump on and off is fairly simple.

  Turn off the power to the pool. To do this, find the electrical panel to your home. Then switch off the circuit breaker that supplies power to the pool.

  Open the door of the pool timer.

  Loosen the pool timer's "on" and "off" trip pins. The trip pins are also known as tripper pins.

  Set the "on" trip pin. This pin should be labeled as "on." Reposition it to the desired time (a.m. or p.m.), and then tighten the pin.

  Set the "off" trip pin. Reposition it to the desired time (a.m. or p.m.), and then tighten the pin.

  Set time and date. Rotate the dial clockwise (a.m. or p.m.) until it is lined up with the pointer.

  Close the pool timer's door.

  Restore electrical power to the pool. Do this by switching on the electrical panel's circuit breaker that supplies power to the pool.
