The Tanner stages are a system of classifying the physical changes that occur during puberty. The stages are based on the development of the genitalia and breasts, and they range from 1 to 5.

Boys:

* Tanner stage 1: Prepubertal. The genitalia are small and underdeveloped. The testes are about the size of a pea, and the scrotum is smooth.

* Tanner stage 2: Early puberty. The testes begin to enlarge, and the scrotum becomes redder and thicker.

* Tanner stage 3: Mid puberty. The testes continue to enlarge, and the penis begins to grow longer and thicker.

* Tanner stage 4: Late puberty. The testes are fully grown, and the penis is fully developed. The pubic hair has spread to the inner thighs.

* Tanner stage 5: Postpubertal. The genitalia are fully developed, and the pubic hair has reached its adult distribution.

Girls:

* Tanner stage 1: Prepubertal. The breasts are small and undeveloped. The nipples are flat and not pigmented.

* Tanner stage 2: Early puberty. The breasts begin to enlarge, and the nipples become larger and more pigmented.

* Tanner stage 3: Mid puberty. The breasts continue to enlarge, and the nipples become fully pigmented. The areolae begin to enlarge and darken.

* Tanner stage 4: Late puberty. The breasts are fully grown, and the areolae are fully developed. The pubic hair has spread to the inner thighs.

* Tanner stage 5: Postpubertal. The breasts are fully developed, and the pubic hair has reached its adult distribution.
