How to Obtain a Healthy Lifestyle During Adolescence

The habits that you develop during adolescence affect your health as an adult. Poor lifestyle choices, such as overeating, tobacco use and lack of physical activity, will increase your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and cancer as an adult. However, living healthfully will nourish your body, keep you energized and minimize sickness. To obtain a healthy lifestyle during adolescence, you must make choices and engage in activities that contribute to your overall health.

Instructions

    • 1

Play sports. Engaging in sport activities is the best way to stay active. Physical activity keeps your muscles and joints strong, supports your immune system and improves cardiovascular health. Join a sports team in your community or at school.

    • 2

Limit your fast-food intake. Since your body is still growing, you want to nourish your cells with healthy foods. Fast foods are high in fat, sodium, calories and sugar, which will weigh you down and tire you out. Choose wraps, subs and salads instead of cheeseburgers, fries and pizza.

    • 3

Drink water. Water keeps your body hydrated, boosts your metabolism and supports the function of your vital organs. Purchase a water bottle, fill it with fresh water and carry it with you throughout the day.

    • 4

Avoid cigarettes, drugs and alcohol. If you use these substances during your adolescent years, you will likely develop a habit that will carry over into adulthood. These substances alter the normal functions of your organs and can lead to severe illness or death if used excessively. Never smoke, drink or do drugs.

    • 5

Choose health-conscious friends. It is easier to stay on a healthy path if your closest friends are healthy and active. Choose friends who play sports, eat healthy and abstain from cigarettes, drugs and alcohol.
