What to Do if Your Child Eats a Marijuana Edible
1. Stay calm and don’t panic. Most edible products contain low amounts of THC, so it is not likely that your child will seriously hurt from ingesting one. However, it’s still important to carefully observe them and monitor for any symptoms.
2. Call the Poison Control Center. The poison control center can provide you information and guidance on what to do. They can be reached at 1-800-222-1222.
3. Give your child plenty of fluids. Dehydration can worsen the effects of marijuana.
4. Monitor your child for symptoms. Symptoms of marijuana edibles can include:
- Altered mental state
- Lethargy
- Confusion
- Anxiety
- Paranoia
- Increased heart rate
- Nausea and vomiting
- Respiratory problems
- Seizures
5. If your child is vomiting, do not induce vomiting again. This can lead to aspiration, which is when stomach contents are inhaled into the lungs.
6. If your child has seizures, call 911 immediately.
7. Contact your child’s doctor or health care provider. Let them know what happened and what symptoms your child is experiencing.
8. Stay with your child until they are feeling better. It may be helpful to talk to them and reassure them that they will be okay.
