What do you if your child has over 40 fever?
For a child over the age of 3 months:
- Call your doctor. A child with a temperature of 104°F or higher needs to be evaluated by a doctor.
- Give the child acetaminophen or ibuprofen. These medications can help lower the child's temperature and make them more comfortable. Follow the dosing instructions on the medication label.
- Remove the child's clothing. This will help the body cool down.
- Sponge the child's body with cool water. This can also help lower the child's temperature.
- Give the child plenty of fluids
- Do not give the child aspirin. Aspirin can cause a rare but serious condition called Reye's syndrome in children.
- Monitor the child's temperature and symptoms closely. If the fever lasts more than 48 hours, or the child develops any other symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or rash, call the doctor.
For a child under the age of 3 months:
- Call your doctor immediately. A fever of 100.4°F or higher in a child under 3 months old needs to be evaluated by a doctor immediately.
- Do not give the child any medication. Only a doctor can recommend medication for a child under 3 months old.
- Follow the other instructions for children over the age of 3 months.
It is important to remember that a fever is the body's natural response to infection, and does not need to be treated. The goal is to keep the child comfortable and hydrated, and ensure that the fever does not become too high.
