Pediatric Hip Problems

Infants, children and young adults are typically affected by bone and joint disorders that are specific to their age group. Pediatric hip problems are few in number and present with unusual symptoms.
  1. Hip Dysplasia

    • While the exact cause of hip dysplasia is unknown, the condition in children creates the following symptoms: uneven leg lengths, limping and lack of flexibility and/or mobility in one leg.

    Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

    • The top of the femur that helps to form the hip joint, the femoral capital epiphysis can slip, which generally occurs in children aged 10 to 16 years. Symptoms of this condition include pain in the knee.

    Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease

    • A condition that causes the femoral head of the thighbone to deteriorate, Legg-Calve Perthes Disease can lead to complications such as joint deformity and arthritis. Symptoms of this condition include pain in the knee and/or thigh, loss of ability to rotate the hip and limping.

    Treatment

    • Treatment for pediatric hip problems vary greatly based upon the child's age and specific condition.

    • Early diagnosis is key to successfully treating pediatric hip problems. If your child displays any signs of hip issues, seek medical help as soon as possible.
