Taking A Child's Rectal Temperature
-
1
Take the digital rectal thermometer out of its holder.
-
2
Gently clean the pointed end of the rectal thermometer with soap or alcohol and wash with cool water. Do not rinse with hot water, because that can change the accuracy of the temperature, and you might need to take it again.
-
3
Apply a small amount of lubricant, such as Vaseline or lubricating jelly, to the pointed end of the rectal thermometer. This will make it easier to insert and more comfortable for your child.
-
4
Place a towel where you are planning to put your child, in case of a sudden bowel movement.
-
5
Put your child across your lap or on a hard surface before taking a rectal temperature.
-
6
Slide the pointed end of the thermometer until it is inserted approximately ½ inch. Do not push farther if it becomes difficult to insert, and do not force the thermometer into your child's rectum.
-
7
Hold the thermometer while you take the temperature and stay with your child. Keep the thermometer inserted until the rectal thermometer beeps.
-
8
Gently remove the rectal thermometer and read the numbers that appear in the window. This is the child's temperature.
-
9
Write down the child's rectal temperature and the time that you took it.
-
10
Wash the pointed tip of the thermometer with water, soap and rubbing alcohol before placing it in the holder.
