About Toddler Ear Pain
In toddlers, ear pain is almost always caused by an acute or chronic infection. There are several ways to keep a toddler comfortable while he has an earache or ear infection.-
Contacting a Doctor
-
A physician should be contacted promptly if your toddler has ear pain, especially if there is a fever. Antibiotics for ear infections are much more effective in the early stages of infection.
Comfort Measures
-
Ear pain is worsened by lying down, so the toddler's head should be kept propped up. A hot water bottle or heating pad, placed against the ear, can also help relieve pain and pressure.
Medication
-
Acetominophen (Tylenol) and ibuprofen (Motrin) are effective in relieving toddler ear pain. A pediatrician may also prescribe a medicine containing codeine to relieve the pain, but it should be used only as directed, since it can have serious side effects.
Management
-
Pain caused by an ear infection will usually improve within a few days of beginning antibiotic treatment. Tell your pediatrician if your toddler's symptoms haven't improved by the end of the treatment course.
Prevention
-
Toddler ear pain can be prevented by avoiding bottles, swimming pools and irritants like cigarette smoke. Colds, allergies and viral infections can make a child more prone to ear infections.
