Natural Approaches to Irregular Periods

Irregular periods have a number of causes, from your diet and lifestyle to hormone imbalances. This can be especially frustrating if you are trying to conceive, because it can be difficult to plan intercourse for the best chance of conception. However, irregular periods can be unsettling even if becoming pregnant isn't your goal. There are several natural approaches to correcting irregular periods. If your problems continue, however, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
  1. Regular Exercise

    • A too-high or too-low percentage of body fat can lead to menstrual irregularities. Make it a goal to exercise, but keep it in check: Too much exercise can interfere with your cycle as well. Aim for about 30 minutes of low-impact exercise a day, such as riding a bicycle, walking or swimming. Also consider some weight training. Get your physician's approval before starting a new exercise routine.

    Reduce Your Stress Level

    • Stress can play a big part in irregular periods. Regular exercise can help here, too. It's also important to take time for yourself every day. If you are unable to leave your home on a regular basis due to your responsibilities, carve out some time to take a long shower, curl up with a book or watch a movie. Take up yoga or meditation. Get a pedicure or a simple hair cut on a regular basis.

    Watch Your Soy Intake

    • Consuming to much soy can have a lengthening effect on your menstrual cycle. Soy contains isoflavones, which are similar to the human hormone estrogen, and eating too many soy products can prolong your cycle and make your period late or irregular.

    Insulin Resistance Diet

    • Some menstrual irregularities are due to mild insulin resistance, which is sometimes a precursor to diabetes. On an insulin resistance diet, you should avoid highly processed carbohydrates, such as simple sugars, white bread and pasta, as well as excess fat. Concentrate instead on nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables as well as lean protein. Some of the best vegetables are broccoli, kale, zucchini and celery. Drink a lot of water and avoid juice and sodas.
