Disposal of Sanitary Napkins

Sanitary napkins, typically referred to as pads, are adhesive-backed rectangles of absorbent material that secure inside your underwear. Until the 1970's sanitary napkins were bulky and cumbersome -- held in place by an elastic band and hooks. In 2011, sanitary napkins exist in a range of thicknesses, shapes and absorption capacities. Some brands also offer protective adhesive wings that stick to the underside of your underwear. Modern manufacturing practices package most sanitary napkins folded inside individual wrapping.

  Peel off your used sanitary pad, while sitting on the toilet to avoid accidentally staining your clothing.

  Roll the used sanitary pad into a roll. The adhesive backing will secure the roll momentarily.

  Wrap the rolled pad again in several strips of toilet paper, or the individual plastic wrapping included in the packaging. Both toilet paper and packaged wrapping prevent the pad from unrolling in the disposal container.

  Place your securely rolled pad into the designated container. Most public and school restrooms have a disposal container mounted to the stall wall or on the floor. You can also throw it away in the bathroom trash, if no container available. Flushing your pad down the toilet will clog plumbing.
