1
Take over-the-counter medications that contain ibuprofen or naproxen. Medications should be taken one to days before the start of a menstrual cycle. Taking medications after symptoms start can make it too difficult to manage the pain. If over-the-counter medications don't work, ask your doctor to prescribe you an oral contraceptive containing estrogen and progestin. These pills contain hormones that lessen your flow and relieve your cramps.

Exercise. Working out all month long can reduce stress and keep the cramps under control. Go for a jog around your neighborhood or use the elliptical trainer or bike at the gym. In addition, practice yoga or meditation to relax your muscles.

Use a heating pad to relieve menstrual cramps. Heat is soothing and can relax your muscles. Lie down and place a heating pad on your lower stomach. Remove the heating pad before you go to sleep. If you don't have a heating pad, take a hot shower or bath.
