Gifts to Bring a Woman in Labor

Labor is an exciting stage in a pregnant woman's life. After months of planning and caring for a new baby she is about to meet her new child. However, at the same time, labor is also a physically and mentally stressful experience. Planning to support a woman's labor by bringing her a gift that she can use during or shortly thereafter is a practical way to let her know that you are not only excited about the impending birth, but that you want to assist her throughout the process.
  1. Labor Kit

    • A labor kit is a collection of items that a pregnant woman can use during the course of her hospitalization and shortly afterward. Items included in the kit are often ones that are packed and brought to the hospital prior to delivery. You can buy a labor kit or make one by gathering items such as nursing pads, bottles and diapers. A nice touch is to add a pen and a labor journal so that the new mom can record an account of the birth while events are still fresh in her mind.

    Gift Certificate

    • Giving birth takes a toll both physically and mentally on a new mother. Presenting her with a gift certificate to a spa prior to labor is a nice way to remind her that the discomfort is only temporary and that she will have some pampering in the near future. Include an offer to babysit while she is at the spa. Other gift certificate ideas include offering to do laundry and/or clean the house after the family returns home. As labor takes a toll on a woman's body, the new mom may not be able to engage in these activities for a short period of time.

    Candles and Room Sprays

    • Women in labor are increasingly using candles and room sprays to create a relaxing and soothing birthing environment. Lavender, in particular, is known to reduce tension and pain. Prior to buying a candle and/or room spray contact the hospital where the birth is to occur and inquire as to whether these items are permissible. If a traditional candle is not allowed, opt for a flameless candle or an aroma plug-in.

    Labor Gown

    • Special hospital gowns are made for expectant mothers that are comfortable, stylish and that offer more coverage than a traditional hospital gown. Labor gowns have extra snaps to allow for easy access so that doctors and nurses can start IV lines and administer epidurals. They also make it easier for breast feedings. Unlike traditional gowns, which are one size only, labor gowns come in several sizes that take into account the mother's size and weight.
