How to Blend Boniva

Boniva, a once-a-month prescription drug, is an oral medication intended to help women manage postmenopausal osteoporosis. When taken regularly, Boniva can easily be blended into daily life. Your doctor may prescribe Boniva alone or with other related or unrelated drugs, but Boniva should be taken by itself. Other drugs may follow after an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a day of the month that you can easily remember as the day on which to take one Boniva tablet. It can be any single day as long as you adhere to the schedule.

    • 2

Set your alarm to go off an hour earlier than usual on the day that you are scheduled to take Boniva, which should be taken in the morning, an hour before you eat anything or drink anything other than plain water.

    • 3

Take Boniva by swallowing it whole, along with 8 oz. of plain water. Do not take Boniva with other liquids, such as sparkling water, coffee, tea, milk, juice or soda. Record the time you took Boniva.

    • 4

Go for a walk or take care of usual daily chores. Once you take Boniva, avoid lying down for about an hour. This will help decrease the risk of esophagus and stomach problems.

    • 5

Take other required oral medications and supplements no sooner than an hour after taking Boniva. This includes antacids, calcium and vitamins.

    • 6

Enjoy a healthy, nutritious breakfast and continue the day as you normally would. You do not need to worry about Boniva for another month. You may experience side effects such as diarrhea, arm or leg pain, or upset stomach. Talk to your doctor if Boniva is disrupting your everyday life.
