The Methods of Child Birth

Choose a childbirth education class that supports a woman's ability to give birth. Become informed concerning medical procedures, risks, and how to work with your body in labor. Be prepared for breastfeeding and the immediate postpartum period.
  1. Bradley Method

    • A woman and her partner are encouraged to work together to learn relaxation techniques.

Bradley classes are taught by independent teachers. Their focus is on relaxation as the primary way of dealing with pain in childbirth. Exercise, nutrition, partner as coach, and creating a birth plan are topics covered in class. Classes are small, with less than eight couples, and include a student workbook. Partners are encouraged to attend and learn relaxation techniques and other tips for helping their partner in labor.

    Hypno Birthing

    • Women learn intense relaxation and meditation to help with labor.

Hypno Birthing classes teach intense relaxation techniques as a way to handle pain in childbirth. Women are taught to achieve an almost trance-like state in labor. They are encouraged to work with their body and to not be afraid of the power of labor. A workbook and CD's are included in the class fee.

    Lamaze

    • Massage techniques help alleviate discomfort in labor.

Lamaze instruction begins with an emphasis on normal pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum period. Relaxation and massage techniques are taught in class, as well as a healthy lifestyle. In class, students learn about medical procedures and the importance of communicating with your health care team.
