How to Insert a Contraceptive Diaphragm

A latex cup that's inserted in the vagina, the diaphragm is a relatively inexpensive, nonhormonal way to help prevent pregnancy. When placed over the opening to the cervix, a diaphragm blocks sperm from getting to the egg. In addition, diaphragms are used with spermicide, which makes sperm immobile. Inserting the diaphragm correctly is crucial to its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.

Instructions

    • 1

      Wash and dry your hands.

    • 2

Squeeze about a tablespoon of spermicide into the diaphragm's cup. Spread some more around the rim of the diaphragm.

    • 3

After choosing a comfortable position, separate the lips of your vulva with one hand, Planned Parenthood says.

    • 4

Pinch the diaphragm with the other hand to fold it half, rim to rim. Make sure the spermicide doesn't leak out when you fold the diaphragm. Planned Parenthood suggests pressing your index finger against the fold to get a firmer grip while inserting the diaphragm.

    • 5

Insert the diaphragm in your vagina as far as you can. Feel to make sure your cervix is covered and that the diaphragm is behind your pubic bone.
