Uses of Progesterone Cream

Menopausal women may choose to use progesterone cream to regulate the amount of estrogen in their system. Too much estrogen puts women at a greater risk for certain cancers and also contributes to osteoporosis. When in menopause, progesterone levels become next to nothing, and this exacerbates the effects of estrogen. Using a progesterone cream is one solution to increase progesterone levels, but you should consult your doctor before using any new hormone treatment.
  1. Reduces Estrogen Symptoms

    • High levels of estrogen in both menopausal women and in women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) bring about many symptoms, which include mood swings, sore breasts, fatigue and depression. Progesterone regulates the estrogen, preventing it from being the dominant hormone and causing negative side effects.

    Reduces the Risk of Cancer

    • High levels of estrogen in the absence (or decreased presence) of progesterone increase the likelihood of women developing breast, uterine and ovarian cancer. In addition, high levels of estrogen can lead to fibroids (noncancerous tumors) in the breasts and uterus. Progesterone is one treatment option used by the Mayo Clinic to reduce fibroid tissue.

    Helps Wtih Stress-induced PMS

    • For some pre-menopausal women, stress can cause PMS symptoms even if progesterone levels are normal. Using progesterone cream can increase the amount of progesterone in a woman's system to help counteract stress-induced PMS.

    Fights Osteoporosis

    • Increased estrogen causes a woman's body to remove calcium from her bones at a faster rate than just normal aging--this leads to osteoporosis (the loss of bone due to aging). Increasing progesterone signals the woman's body to build bone to strengthen her skeleton.
