Resources for Low Income Prenatal Care
Health care providers agree that obtaining adequate prenatal care is essential for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Women who do not have medical insurance, or have limited financial resources are more likely to forgo this important care, which can put both them and their babies at risk. Fortunately, there are many resources for low-income prenatal care available.-
Pregnancy Medicaid
-
Pregnant women who do not have medical insurance and whose income falls below the minimum requirement for their state may qualify for pregnancy Medicaid. This type of Medicaid pays for doctor’s visits, hospital stays, and prescription medicines associated with the pregnancy, and lasts for approximately six months after the baby is born or the pregnancy ends. Contact the Department Of Human Services in your city to learn more about the requirements and application process.
Sliding Scale Health Clinics
-
Most cities have health clinics that operate on a sliding scale. Planned Parenthood, for example, offers pregnancy tests at little to no charge, based on the income of the patient. Clinics that offer comprehensive prenatal care also exist. Based on the number of people who live in your household, and your total income, prenatal care services are available at low and even no cost to certain individuals. Check your phone book or search online for clinics in your area or ask your caseworker for a list of clinics.
WIC
-
A healthy, nutritious diet benefits both pregnant women and their babies. WIC is designed to provide pregnant and nursing mothers, as well as children under five, with food vouchers for milk, cheese, bread, juice and other basic healthy food items. Eligibility is determined by verifying pregnancy and/or the ages of all children residing in the household, and by income, which must be at or below state standards in order to qualify. Contact your local DHS office first to make an appointment to determine WIC eligibility.
