Information on High FSH
FSH, which stands for follicle stimulating hormone, is an important reproductive hormone in women. High FSH levels can greatly affect a woman's chances of becoming pregnant.-
Fact
-
FSH is produced in the pituitary gland.
Function
-
FSH stimulates the growth of follicles, which are structures within the ovaries that contain egg cells. Once follicles grow to maturity, they release an egg for fertilization.
Causes
-
When follicles quit responding to FSH, either due to age or other factors, the hormone continues to be produced and builds up in the body, causing high levels.
Identification
-
When infertility is suspected, doctors will test the FSH levels in a woman's blood on the third day of her cycle. Ideal FSH levels are between 12 and 15 mIU/ml.
Significance
-
If FSH levels are too high, it indicates the woman may have trouble conceiving because follicles aren't releasing eggs as they should. High FSH may also indicate any produced eggs aren't getting the right amount of nutrients and oxygen, possibly resulting in miscarriages and birth defects.
Treatment
-
Lowering FSH remains controversial. Some practitioners believe a healthy diet, body cleansing, and acupressure massage can improve oxygen flow within the body and lower FSH. Others rely solely on medicine and estrogen treatments.
