Tri-Spintec Side Effects

Like with any hormonal birth control pill, various side effects can occur with the use of Tri-Sprintec, a generic form of Ortho Tri-Cyclen, a prescription birth control pill used to treat irregular menstrual problems as well as acne. The onset use of this pill can cause breakthrough bleeding or spotting. If this condition persists, a medical professional should be consulted.

    • This hormonal birth control pill is used mainly for its effectiveness (99 percent) at preventing pregnancies. Other uses of the pills include treatment of endometriosis, painful periods (dysmenorrhoea), acne and heavy periods (menorrhagia).     Proper Use

    • The 28-pill pack should be taken in proper order and stored at room temperature. Take the pill once every day at the same time, as it's important to allow the body to regulate itself in regards to the amount of hormones being consumed. The pill can be take with or without food. If a dose is missed, double up on the pills you take during the next dosage. If more than one pill is missed, consult your health care professional for proper instructions of further use of Tri-Sprintec.

    Side Effects

    • If any of the following side effects occur and persist, consult a health care professional to determine if Tri-Sprintec is right for you. Some of these side effects include breakthrough bleeding, spotting, headaches (including migraines), breast tenderness, vomiting and nausea, increased blood pressure, lowered sex drive, blood clots, dizziness and loss of appetite.

    Precautions

    • There is an increased risk of developing blood clots while on these birth control pills. For women 35 and over and for those who smoke, this risk is higher. Women who suspect that they are pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use Tri-Sprintec.

    Warning

    • Women with a history of migraines, breast cancer, depression or blood clots should consult a doctor when deciding if Tri-Sprintec is right for them. Also, women with liver disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease or other heart valve problems should most likely avoid taking Tri-Sprintec. Always consult with a doctor to discuss whether or not Tri-Sprintec will be effective for your specific health conditions.
