Uterine Fibroid Vs. Retroverted Uterus

Uterine fibroids and a retroverted uterus may have similar symptoms, but very different causes. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous masses that grow in the uterus, especially during child-bearing years. A retroverted uterus occurs when the uterus is tilted back farther than normal.

  1. Shared Symptoms

    • Uterine fibroids and retroverted uterus can cause frequent urination, lower back pain, pain during sex and painful menstruation. Both conditions may cause infertility, though this is rare.

    Uterine Fibroid Symptoms

    • Symptoms caused by uterine fibroids but not by retroverted uterus include heavy menstruation, longer periods and lower abdominal enlargement. Pregnancy complications such as abnormal fetal position, miscarriage and premature labor may occur.

    Retroverted Uterus Symptoms

    • Symptoms caused by retroverted uterus but not uterine fibroids include difficulty using tampons, irregular menstruation, irregular ovulation and urinary tract infections.

    Tests

    • Uterine fibroids may be detected with a CAT scan, MRI or ultrasound, or may require surgery to confirm. A retroverted uterus may be detected with a vaginal exam or ultrasound.

    Frequency

    • Up to 20 percent of women worldwide have a retroverted uterus, many of whom are born with it, according to the British website Women's Health. Uterine fibroids affect three out of four women before the age of 50, but often cause no symptoms or complications, according to the Mayo Clinic.
