Hysterectomy Urinary Infections

If you undergo a hysterectomy, you risk complications like entering menopause early or developing blood clots in your legs. You could also develop a urinary infection if you require a catheter while recovering from surgery.
  1. Hysterectomy

    • During a hysterectomy, your uterus is removed by a surgeon. She can access your uterus through an incision in your lower abdomen or in your vagina.

    Urinary Infection

    • A urinary infection occurs when bacteria enters your urinary tract and causes inflammation in your urethra, bladder or kidneys.

    Relationship

    • After undergoing a hysterectomy, you may need to use a catheter for one or two days. Using a catheter increases your risk of developing a urinary infection.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of a urinary infection include frequently needing to urinate, painful urination and a general feeling of not being well.

    Treatment

    • A urinary infection that develops after you undergo a hysterectomy can be treated with a course of antibiotics.
