GERD Symptoms in Menopause
-
Heartburn
-
Heartburn is known as a burning sensation located in the center of the chest. Heartburn can also potentially spread upward toward the neck and into the throat.
Pain
-
Heartburn can also be accompanied by a sharp pain or pressure in the chest. This pain can be similar to angina, which can cause alarm for some women.
Esophageal Symptoms
-
Acid that enters the esophagus can cause a sore throat, hoarseness, or laryngitis. Laryngitis occurs when a woman loses part or all of her voice or is unable to make any sound due to the intense pain or irritation of the esophagus.
Coughing
-
Coughing is also associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease. At night, coughing may be dry and persistent. Over time, coughing may become chronic or reoccurring.
Asthma
-
The nerves in the throat and chest may become affected by GERD, which can lead to narrowing of the breathing tubes. This can result in asthma or an asthma attack.
