Menopause and Maca
Maca is an herb grown in the Andes. Natives of Peru have used this root-like plant as a food and medicine for over 2,000 years. Research indicates it might be a useful for addressing several aspects of menopause.-
How it Works
-
Maca is considered an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body adapt to changes. Menopause produces many changes in the body and it might help balance hormones.
Possible Benefits
-
Maca is touted for relieving psychological symptoms of menopause like anxiety, depression and hot flashes, as well as increasing sexual desire.
Research
-
Alternative medicine expert Dr. Ray Sahelian notes human studies are limited, but have shown benefit. A study published in the September 2008 volume of Menopause found women who took 3.5 grams of maca daily for six weeks reported better psychological well-being and sexual function.
Side Effects
-
According to Dr. Sahelian, a possible side effect is insomnia, if taken in too large a dose. He states it appears to be a safe herb with no known toxicity.
Considerations
-
Supplements always carry a recommended dosage on their product label; check with a knowledgeable health care provider before using any supplements to be sure they are appropriate for you, and to receive guidance on appropriate doses.
