How to Check the Position of Your Cervix

The cervix is the only part of the uterus that can be felt. This opening allows sperm to pass into the uterus and also allows a fetus to be born. The cervix can also indicate when a woman can get pregnant. The cervix will be soft, high, open and wet near ovulation--otherwise known as S.H.O.W. Finding the cervical position (either high or low) can help you determine what stage you are in during your menstrual cycle.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands. Introducing bacteria into the vagina can cause infections such as yeast.

    • 2

Get into a squatting position. You can do this by squatting down or by sitting on the toilet. This allows better access to the cervix.

    • 3

Insert one or two fingers into the vagina slowly. Be careful to not scratch the vaginal wall with your fingernails.

    • 4

Feel toward the back of your vagina to locate your cervix. The cervix will feel either like the tip of your nose or your lips (depending on the time of month). It will block your fingers from proceeding further into the vagina and will feel round.

    • 5

Note if the cervix was easily reached or if it barely touched the tips of your fingers. It may also not be low enough to be located. If the cervix was hard to reach or could not be found, this means the position is considered high. A high cervix often means that you are close to ovulation. If you could easily reach your cervix, this means that the position is considered low and you are not near ovulation.

    • 6

Remove your fingers. Do this gently in order to not cause abrasions or scratches on the vaginal wall.

    • 7

      Wash your hands.
