How to Start on the Birth Control Pill
Finding the best way to prevent unwanted pregnancy can be a challenging process. It is important to know all of your options when selecting a method of birth control. The Pill (oral contraceptive) is one of the most commonly used forms of birth control today. There are two types of birth control pills: progestin-only or combination pills (made with estrogen and progestin). Planned Parenthood notes the most commonly prescribed birth control pills today are combination pills. When taken properly, all birth control pills provide the same protection in preventing pregnancy.Things You'll Need

Take your pills as prescribed. The pill is taken once daily for 28 days or 21 days depending upon the type of pill you are using. Dr. Collins of Planned Parenthood explains how birth control pills are used each month: "Most combination pills come in 28-day or 21-day packs. Both types have 21 "active" pills that contain hormones. The last seven pills in 28-day packs of combination pills are called "reminder" pills. In 21-day packs, one pill is taken every day for three weeks in a row." If you realize you have forgotten to take your pill, you can take it with your normal dosage the next day. It is important not to take more than two pills per day. Dosage instructions will be noted on your prescription and on your pill container.

Be aware of the side effects. Kidshealth.org notes possible side effects of the pill as "irregular menstrual bleeding, nausea, headaches, dizziness, breast tenderness, mood changes, and blood clots (rare in women under 35 who do not smoke)." These side effects usually decrease within 2 or 3 months of taking the pill.
