Changes During Menopause
There are several changes that take place in a woman's body before and during menopause. These changes are natural and are commonly experienced by women with menopause symptoms.-
Hormonal Changes
-
During menopause, levels of the hormone estrogen, which is responsible for the regulation of ovulation and menstruation, will decrease considerably, resulting in irregular periods and decreased fertility. Once this decline takes place, you may also experience symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats.
Physical Changes
-
Due to the hormonal changes occurring during menopause, some women experience increased abdominal fat and thinning hair. This type of hair loss is called androgenic alopecia (male-pattern hair loss).
Vaginal Changes
-
With the start of menopause, a woman may experience vaginal dryness, which may cause slight bleeding after sexual intercourse. Also during menopause the vagina will become shorter and the walls thinner (vaginal atrophy).
Sexual Changes
-
Changes in hormones during menopause may cause decreased libido. Some women may lose interest in sex or find it painful due to vaginal dryness.
Mental Changes
-
Two of the most common symptoms of menopause are mood swings and irritability. Certain women develop these symptoms because they are unhappy or depressed by the idea of starting menopause.
