How to Miss a Period on Purpose Using Birth Control

There are a number of reasons a woman may want to purposely skip her menstrual period during a given month: perhaps she is getting married and wants to make sure her period doesn't come that day. Or maybe her period is due during exam week and she'd rather not have that bother while sitting for her tests. Whatever the reason, it is both easy and safe to suppress a period using birth control pills.

Instructions

Determine when you want to skip your period. Naturally, the timing of this process is key. Take a look at your calendar and figure out precisely when you want your cycle to continue without interruption.

    • 2

Take your birth control pills as you would ordinarily until you reach the end of your third week of pills. The pills you take during these first three weeks of your cycle are those that contain active hormones that prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg. These are also the pills that prevent you from having a period.

Open a new packet of birth control pills and begin with Day 1. This means that if you take the 28-day form of birth control pills, you must not take the fourth week of pills. These pills are placebos (contain no active ingredients), and are taken simply to remind you to continue taking your pills during your withdrawal bleed. By discarding that fourth week of pills and starting on a new cycle of active birth controls, you will miss your period.

Take the birth control pills daily, as usual. Complete the entire pack, including the fourth week of pills. During this fourth week, you will get your period. However, if you would like to skip your period again, simply open a new packet of pills after you complete your third week, and begin taking pills starting with Day 1, as before.
