Perimenopause Symptoms Vs. Menopause Symptoms

You have probably heard a great deal about perimenopause and menopause, but you also might be wondering what the differences are.
  1. Perimenopause

    • Perimenopause is the time that leads up to menopause, and for one year after you start having perimenopausal symptoms. Perimenopause can include many of the symptoms of menopause, and symptoms can start as young as 35 years. The age varies with the individual.

    Perimenopausal Symptoms

    • When you begin having perimenopausal symptoms you can expect night sweats, hot flashes, difficulty sleeping, changes in frequency of your periods, mood changes, and difficulty focusing.

    Treatment for Perimenopause

    • You and your doctor might decide to treat your symptoms with birth-control pills, which help some women. According to Women's Health, better eating habits, exercise to maintain a healthy weight, and stress-relief techniques such as yoga might help.

    Menopause

    • You are considered to be in menopause one year after your last period. You can expect to have the same symptoms as with perimenopause, but bone loss seems to be greater, as declining hormone levels can affect bone health.

    Treatment for Menopause

    • You might consider hormone-replacement therapy as long as you are not at risk for strokes, heart attacks or blood clots. Again, maintaining a health weight, reducing stress, and healthier eating can help with menopausal symptoms.
