Advice on Symptoms for Missing a Period
When menstruation occurs in monthly cycles that are very similar every month, it is in indication your body is in good working order. Some women will miss a period, and if this should happen to you, you need to find out why you did not get your period in case the cause is a serious underlying illness that needs immediate treatment.-
Analyze Your Situation
-
Include all factors when trying to determine why you missed a period. The reason may be a simple and benign one, but one that may still need to be addressed and presented to a qualified physician.
Amenorrhea
-
Consider that your symptom of a missing period may be the symptom of secondary amenorrhea if it has been at least three months since your last period. Since pregnancy can be the cause of secondary amenorrhea, it is important that you find out whether or not you are pregnant as soon as possible, so that you can properly take of yourself and your unborn child.
Breastfeeding is another cause of secondary amenorrhea, so if you are breastfeeding a baby, consider this as a possible cause.
Some contraceptives and medications may also cause amenorrhea. Stress may also affect menstruation. Other causes of secondary amenorrhea include a hormone abnormality, being excessively thin, exercising too much, abnormal eating and premature ovarian failure.
If amenorrhea is caused by stress, too much exercise or being too thin, a simple change in lifestyle may help. Have amenorrhea investigated by your doctor to rule out a serious illness as the cause.
Menopause
-
Consider that you may be in menopause if you are age 40 or older and you missed a period. Notice if you have other signs of menopause such as hot flashes, incontinence and pain during intercourse, frequent vaginal and urinary tract infections, insomnia, mood swings or weight gain. If you strongly suspect you are going through menopause, do not stress over it. Menopause is a normal occurrence. Simply get examined by your doctor to confirm that you are going through menopause and ask him what you can do to alleviate the symptoms, if you have any symptoms.
