What Are the Treatments for Kidney Stones When Pregnant?

During the second and third trimester of pregnancy, some woman may develop kidney stones. These uncomfortable masses are not harmful to the child, but make for a very painful time for the mother-to-be. Treatment for kidney stones may vary for a woman depending on length of pregnancy, and seriousness of the stones.
  1. What is a Kidney Stone?

    • A kidney stone is a mass that forms from crystals that break away from the urinary tract. These can make for a painful ride, although in 70 percent of cases the kidney stones will pass on their own, you may need to see your physician.

    Drink Water

    • Treatment for pregnant woman will be much different than for the average folk. Many times a doctor may just encourage the stone to pass on its own, and will encourage the mother to drink a lot of water for that to happen.

    Alpha-Blockers

    • If your doctor is certain the stone can come out on its own, but may need a little help, an Alpha-Blocker may be given. These work as a muscle relaxer that encourages the stone to pass on its own. Some doctors avoid using these, but if you happen to get a stone during your first trimester they may be administered.

    Urethral Stent

    • A urethral stent may be used to relieve some of the pain and help the kidney stones pass. This is a tube that is inserted into a woman's bladder, going to her kidney, which allows for space and a bit of assistance to help the stones come out.

    Ureteroscopy

    • A Ureteroscopy is another solution to someone with painful kidney stones, but it's often a last measure for a pregnant woman. This procedure entails a ureterscope through the urethra and up into the bladder. This isn't a painful procedure and most only complain of feeling a bit of pressure.

    Preventing Kidney Stones

    • Drink plenty of fluids, but limit the amount of sweet sugary drinks you have. Keep your diet balanced and healthy, and you may be able to avoid kidney stones in your future.
