According to Planned Parenthood, an intra-uterine device (IUD) is one of the most effective forms of birth control available. These devices affect the way sperm move and prevent them from joining the egg. In addition, they alter the lining of the uterus. If you're using either the copper or progestin IUD, you may be wondering how quickly fertility resumes after it's removed. In addition to being highly effective, IUDs are fairly reversible, so fertility resumes rather quickly.

Return of Fertility

• After your IUD is removed, you can expect to be fertile fairly quickly. Mirena---manufacturer of the progesterone-releasing IUD---says that menstruation should resume normally within the first six weeks of use. Your first post-IUD ovulation will also occur during this time. Though you may be fertile during this time, you may want to wait 60 to 90 days to make sure any synthetic hormones have left your system. If you were using the copper IUD, this will also give your body time to get rid of any excess copper.

IUDs and Pregnancy

• If you happen to conceive while on the IUD, Planned Parenthood says you may be at an increased risk for ectopic pregnancy, dangerous pelvic infection, miscarriage and early labor and delivery. If you suspect you might be pregnant while you're using an IUD, contact your health care provider immediately. Signs of an ectopic pregnancy include irregular vaginal bleeding, sudden weakness or fainting and pain in the abdomen.
