Qualifications for Being an Egg Donor
Donating your eggs to someone who cannot conceive on their own is an amazing and generous gift; however, there are some qualifications and facts to consider before one can be considered an eligible donor.-
Function
-
Becoming an egg donor requires meeting certain age and physical guidelines. Typically donors are between the ages of 21 to 35. Donors need to be of legal age to sign contracts; however, they can not be older than 35 to ensure a good supply of eggs.
Qualifications
-
The main qualifications for donors appear to be the same across the board. You must be of normal weight, nonsmoker, no history of infertility, no major health concerns or genetic problems, and no criminal convictions. For the most part, the main requirements are that you are a stand-up citizen with a clean bill of health.
Features
-
Certain programs, however, do set their own rules. For example, ProLiviti has a set of rules that require donors to be between the ages of 20 and 30 and have a high school education. Potential donors cannot be on public assistance, have been convicted of a crime or be adopted. Other programs may require a college degree, certain SAT scores or other stringent qualifications depending on their client demographic.
Types
-
Many doctor's appointments are required once you decide to become a donor. Screenings such as a physical, gynecological exam, a medical and family history, blood and urine tests, and a psychological evaluation will take place during the visits. Before you are screened, a program representative will speak with you about your rights and responsibilities.
Warning
-
Certain conditions can prevent a woman from donating regardless of whether she meets the age and physical criteria. These include serious psychological disorders, drug or alcohol abuse, use of psychoactive medications, an unstable marriage or relationship and a history of physical or sexual abuse without receiving professional treatment, as well as being mentally incapable of understanding or participating in the process.
