Foods Not to Eat or Drink in Menopause

According to "Menopause Guidebook: Helping Women Make Informed Healthcare Decisions Around Menopause and Beyond," put out by The North American Menopause Society, knowing which foods to avoid during menopause could make menopause symptoms easier to handle.
  1. Menopause

    • When a woman enters menopause she exchanges a menstrual cycle, with bloating, cramps and irritability, for another set of hormonal changes. Each woman is different and the same is true for her symptoms during menopause.

    Spicy Foods

    • Avoid spicy foods as these can trigger hot flashes, according to The National Women's Health Network.

    Drinks

    • Reduce hot flashes by eliminating alcohol, caffeinated and carbonated drinks.

    Fatty Acids

    • Reduced saturated fats. According to "The American Medical Association Essential Guide to Menopause," after menopause "a high fat diet has been strongly liked to heart disease, stroke, and various cancer especially cancer of the breast, ovary, and colon."

    Sugar

    • Avoid high sugar foods and drinks. Soft drinks, sodas and jelly donuts may taste good but may also increase irritability in menopause.
