Smoking & Fsh Levels

Aside from other health dangers, smoking is linked to damage to the reproductive cycles of women, according to the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP). These effects are measured by the amounts of FSH found in the urine.
  1. Follicle Stimulating Hormones

    • Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH), are produced from the pituitary gland. FSH is increased by smoking and directly affects your reproductive system.

    Menstruation

    • According to the TRDRP, smoking causes high FSH levels, which result in overall shorter menstrual cycles. In fact, some women may skip them entirely on occasion.

    Pregnancy

    • Women who smoke may have a difficult time conceiving, as high FSH levels can destroy your ovaries and disrupt anticipated ovulation, according to the TRDRP. Also, there is a higher chance of miscarriage if you do become pregnant.

    Menopause

    • According to the TRDRP, women smokers reach menopause sooner than non-smokers, because high FSH levels decrease your levels of estrogen and progesterone.

    Prevention

    • The only way to prevent elevated FSH levels from cigarettes is to stop smoking. This is especially imperative if you are trying to conceive or are already pregnant.
