Symptoms of an Impending Heart Attack in Women
Women do not necessarily have the same symptoms as men do preceding a heart attack. Some do not experience chest pains, and others have flu-like symptoms that they do not connect to possible heart disease. It is important for women and their loved ones to learn the symptoms of an impending heart attack, so they can be prepared to react appropriately and quickly.-
Flu-Like Symptoms
-
Up to a month prior to a heart attack, a woman may feel nausea, chills and tiredness, all similar to symptoms of flu.
Breathing
-
Prior to a heart attack, a woman may have periods of shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Walking a short distance may be difficult.
Chest Discomfort
-
The chest may feel as if it is being squeezed or is tight. It can last a few minutes, go away and come back.
Pain
-
Pain can occur in both arms, though the pain in the left arm is more pronounced. There may be pain in the back, between the shoulder blades and in the jaw.
Warning
-
Women should let their doctors know if they have experienced flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, chest tightness or pressure, and/or pain in their arms, back or jaw. Consistent pain should be reported immediately.
