Natural Relief for Hot Flashes
Hot flashes are caused by reduced levels of estrogen that affect the hypothalamus (the body's thermometer). Estrogen levels are reduced due to the decline of ovarian function as women age. Hot flashes are sudden onsets of sweating and elevated body temperature, and their frequency and intensity varies among women.-
Vitamins
-
Take vitamin E supplements to reduce the occurrence of hot flashes. Vitamins B6 (200 to 250 mg daily) and the antioxidant Peridin-C (two tablets three times a day) can be used in conjunction with vitamin E for additional relief.
Exercise
-
Exercising provides the most natural relief from hot flashes, and aerobics combined with strength training relieves their severity. Yoga is another form of exercise that alleviates symptoms. There are yoga postures that can help reduce night sweats, hot flashes and mood swings
Soy
-
Soy has a positive effect on hot flashes and reduces their occurrence. Consuming 60 g of powdered soy protein daily for 12 weeks effectively reduces hot flash occurrences. You can also consume soy in the form of soy milk, tofu, soybeans and soy nuts.
Herbs
-
Brew different herbs together and make a tea to help with symptoms. Plant estrogens that have been found to relieve hot flashes include ginseng, evening primrose oil, licorice root, black cohosh and wild yams. These herbs can be taken as directed by their manufacturers. Always consult with a physician before self-treating with herbs.
Natural Progesterone
-
An estrogen cream can be applied to the skin for absorption into the bloodstream. Rubbing ¼ tsp. of the cream into abdominal area can help to ease hot flashes. Check that your chosen product contains at least 2 percent of progesterone per ounce. These ointments can be purchased over-the-counter or with a doctor's prescription.
Lifestyle Changes
-
Practice deep breathing techniques at the onset of a hot flash. Take six to eight breaths per minute to help you relax and cool off during an episode. Avoid spicy foods, coffee and alcohol, as these are known hot flash triggers. Wear layered clothing to stay cool, and avoid taking hot baths or showers at bedtime.
