Signs of Menopause Onset
Menopause is a normal, natural process of the female body that signals the end of the reproductive stage and is often referred to as the "change of life." During this time changes are taking place in the body that affect both the physical and mental well being of the woman. Learning about menopause and what signs to look for can help a woman prepare for this change so she can stay more comfortable and in control during what could be a very uncomfortable time.-
About Menopause
-
After the absence of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months, a woman is considered to be in menopause. The function of the ovaries is to release an egg once a month preparing for conception and as estrogen and progesterone levels decrease, conception is no longer possible, since these are the hormones that regulate the reproductive organs. Menopause typically begins in the early 50's, but some women may start noticing changes in their monthly cycles as early as their 40's.
Signs
-
With the onset of menopause, a woman will experience some changes in her monthly cycle that can affect her both physically and emotionally. The most common signs of menopause include: changes in frequency and duration of menstrual periods; hot flashes that can occur anytime of the day; fatigue and changes in sleep patterns; headaches and migraines; decreased libido and vaginal lubrication; water retention; and altered emotional states that can create mood swings, irritability and depression.
Comfort Measures
-
Although it is a natural process, menopause can cause discomfort, but there are some ways to stay comfortable and even celebrate this new season in your life. Eating a well balanced whole food diet keeps the body healthy, which allows menopause to happen with less discomfort. Good nutrition should include a wide assortment of fresh fruits and vegetables, 100% whole grains, lean proteins, organic dairy products and be void of junk food, processed foods and white flour and sugar. Include herbs that gently nourish the body and ease any symptoms experienced. Some of the most common herbs for menopause include Black Cohosh to stimulate estrogen production, Evening Primrose oil to soften and condition vaginal tissues, Hawthorn berry and red raspberry leaf to stimulate the female system, and St. John's Wort to ease anxiety and depression. Also include daily exercises such as walking, swimming, jogging or yoga to strengthen the body and give an overall feeling of well being. Practice relaxation or meditation daily to help with sleep and produce a calm state.
