Natural & Herbal Remedies for Menstrual Cramps & Bloating

Menstrual cramps are brought on by our body's release of the hormone prostaglandins. Bloating also accompanies cramps during the premenstrual period. These symptoms vary among women and can range from mild to severe
  1. Herbs and Diet

    • Take 500 milligrams of magnesium, and 440 milligrams of zinc to help reduce bloating and pain from cramping.

Chamomile tea is used to treat menstrual discomfort. Start drinking tea a couple of days before onset of period as a symptom preventative. Then drink at least two cups a day during menstrual period to relieve cramping.

Evening primrose oil, taken regularly, helps block effects of prostaglandins. Primrose oil can be obtained at local health food stores. You can take up to eight capsules daily for the relief of cramping.

Ginger tea is also used to relieve the pain of menstrual cramps. Prepare tea as directed and sip ¼ cup every 15 minutes until cramps begin to subside.

Get adequate amounts of calcium. About 800 milligrams a day is equal to three cups of milk. Calcium helps prevent pain and cramps.

Vitamin B6 has a mild diuretic effect and can help relieve bloating during your period. Make sure to get at least 25 milligrams daily of this vitamin.

Cut out any use of extra salt around the time of your period. Salt increases the amount of bloating experienced during menstruation.

The herb dandelion is a natural diuretic and can help influence our body's ability to rid itself of excessive fluids.

    Execise and Lifestyle

    • Eating smaller meals through out the day, rather than consuming three large ones can help reduce bloating.

Daily use of a heating pad on abdomen and lower back helps ease the pain of menstrual cramping.

Exercise is a natural way to elevate mood and reduce tense muscles. Walking for 20 minutes daily can help reduce pain.

Try stress reducing activities such as yoga or meditation to help provide relief.

Get more rest while experiences menstrual discomfort. Fatigue aggravates feelings of pain. Try to get at least seven to nine hours of sleep during this time.
