Mild Yeast Infection Symptoms

Yeast is a type of fungus called candida. It naturally occurs in moist areas of the body such as the mouth and vagina. Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of candida. You are more likely to develop a yeast infection if you are taking antibiotics, immunosuppressive drugs or oral contraceptives; if you have diabetes or are pregnant; if you use douches or perfumed vaginal hygiene sprays. Men also can can be infected by having sexual intercourse with a woman who has a yeast infection. Many yeast infections are mild and clear up on their own, but you may need to use an over-the-counter medication.
  1. Vaginal Yeast Infections

    • Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are vaginal itching or pain in the vulvar area, a white-colored discharge that looks like cottage cheese, burning or pain during intercourse or urination.

    Yeast Infections in Men

    • Symptoms of a male yeast infection include itching or burning at the tip of the penis, a white discharge, small blisters on the end of the penis or a red-colored rash.

    Thrush

    • Thrush is a yeast infection inside the mouth. It appears as white lesions on the tongue and inside of the cheeks. Lesions may even spread to the tonsils, gums and roof of the mouth. These lesions may bleed and be painful. Oral thrush is most common in babies and older adults.

    Yeast Infections in Babies

    • Yeast infections in babies often begin in the moist folds of the skin, particularly in the diaper area. The skin will appear red and irritated with red dots surrounding the problem areas. There may be pus-filled bumps or a scaling pattern on the skin.

    Other Types of Yeast Infections

    • Esophagitis is a yeast infection that occurs when thrush moves into the esophagus. This condition can affect swallowing.
      Tinea versicolor is a yeast infection that cause white patches on the surface of the skin. The only other symptom of tinea versicolor is mild itching.
      In rare cases, a yeast infection can get into the bloodstream. Yeast infections in the blood stream can be life threatening.
