Perimenopause & Exercise

Perimenopause is the transitional time when a woman nears the end of her reproductive years. Exercise during this time can help relieve discomfort caused by the hormonal fluctuations of perimenopause.
  1. Benefits

    • Exercising during perimenopause may cause an increase in estrogen levels that can counteract hot flashes and night sweats. Physical activity during perimenopause also regulates weight, relieves tension and decreases joint pain.

    Osteoporosis

    • According to a study published in the medical journal Calcified Tissue International, strength training and weight-bearing exercises increase bone density and slow bone loss in perimenopausal women.

    Aerobic

    • Simple aerobic exercises such as walking, biking or swimming can provide relief from perimenopausal symptoms and also decrease cardiovascular risks.

    Yoga

    • Practicing yoga during perimenopause helps to release tension, manage stress and improve flexibility. Some styles of yoga also incorporate weight-bearing exercises that decrease bone loss.

    Kegels

    • Exercising the pelvic muscles using Kegel methods decreases the chance of incontinence sometimes associated with perimenopause.
